Tech Beats Skylights in Straight Sets

Box Score BUTTE, Mont. - Montana Tech defeated Montana State Northern in straight sets, 25-19, 25-18, 25-12, Saturday afternoon in the HPER. Tech, 7-7, 2-0, hit .458 percent for the match while holding the Skylights to just .078.

The Orediggers, who forced 21 Skylight errors, were led Bailie Cortner and Haley Druyvestein who had 11 and nine kills repectively. Junior setter Alison Lunde also added 23 assist and seven digs.

Northern, 4-11, 0-2, was led by Dayna Jensen who had 10 kills, five digs and a block for the Skylights.

The Diggers were up and running in the first set with a quick 4-0 lead. Tech would then open up the set with a commanding 8-3 lead. The Skylights battled back to come within three at 17-14. But that is as close as they will get as the strong arms of Cortner and the Diggers guided them to a 25-19 victory.

In the second set Northern started things off first by scoring on a kill by Cydney Auzenne, however this would be the Skylights' only lead in the entire match. Tech quickly responded back to take a 6-3 lead early on in the match. The two squard would then exchange points until the Diggers rallied for five straight points to go up 17-10. MSUN used a 4-1 run to cut the lead down to 18-14 but once again Tech's office prevailed and guided them to a 25-18 win.

Montana Tech made quick work of Northern in the third set thanks to the strong serves of Makenzie Bauck. The sophomore setter guided Tech to 5-0 run and a 10-3 lead early in the set. Strong defensives plays and pin-point attacks by Tech prevented the Skylights to sideout as the Diggers cruised to a 25-12 victory.

The Orediggers are back in action Saturday September 20th for a Homecoming contest vs. Lewis-State College in the HPER at 7 p.m.
