LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Orediggers fell 2-3 (25-23, 33-31, 25-27, 12-25, 15-13) to no. 8 Vanguard University in their second match of the day at the Biola Summer Slam Tournament.
Tech (1-1) started off strong going up 2-0 in the late-night matchup. However the Lions (2-1) rallied back to win three straight sets and the match.
Middle blocker
Bailie Cortner continued with the hot hand with a 16-kill 7-block performance.
Sydney Norris added a double-double with 16 kills and 14 digs while
Makenzie Bauck posted a career-high 54 assists.
Angie Pancost tied a career-best in digs with 18.
Vanguard had three players with double-digit kills including Sara McKinny who had a team-high 13.
In the first set, both teams came out strong exchanging points. Tech broke lose midway through the set via a 7-2 run highlighted by a Norris kill forcing a Vanguard timeout. The Lions would then go on a run of their own to take the 20-18 lead however that was short lived as
Haley Druyvestein and the Diggers fought back to take the set.
The marathon of a second set saw a total of 64 points, 16 ties and 17 lead changes. Both teams went back-and-forth on the scoreboard throughout the set. With the score knotted at 31, the Diggers were able to take the final two points thanks to a Vanguard error and a block by Norris.
Freshman
Kylee Berridge's strong serves helped Tech take an early 4-1 lead in the third set. The Diggers would maintain their lead until back-to-back kills by Vanguards' Kiana Nicio gave the Lions an 18-17 advantage late in the stanza.
Tech battled back to tie up the contest at 24 off of a kill by
Katie Wiley, but the Lions closed out the set on a 3-1 run on their way to winning the set.
The Diggers struggled to get things going in the fourth frame. Errors plagued Tech as they trailed 15-6 forcing head coach
Brian Solomon to call a timeout. The Diggers were not able to regroup as they fell 25-12 in the set.
The fifth and final set lived up to the hype. Tech jumped to an early 5-1 lead thanks to a Norris kill from Bauck. Following the side change, Vanguard battled back taking the 10-9 advantage. Cortner and the Diggers fought back but it wasn't enough as the Lions went on to win the set and match.
The Diggers conclude their road trip Friday night when they face Menlo College (0-2) at 5:00 p.m. and The Master's College (1-1) at 9:00 p.m.
