Box Score SIOUX CITY, Iowa – No. 24 Montana Tech opened the NAIA National Tournament Pool Play with an upset of No. 11 Georgetown (Ky.). The Orediggers swept the Tigers 27-25, 25-22, 25-14.
Montana Tech (24-9) is now 2-0 in the NAIA National Tournament this year making their first appearance in the tourney in 28 years.
Georgetown (29-8) loses their second straight match but have not played since November 12
th when they fell to No. 4 Lindsey Wilson in the Mid-South Conference Tournament finale.
The Orediggers led much of the first set before the Tigers took four out of five points and a 24-22 lead going into the final point. After an attack error ball handling error by Georgetown,
Jordan Danz scored on a kill and the Diggers had back-to-back blocks taking the first set.
The second set was controlled by Tech leading by as many as six before holding off a late Georgetown rally. The final set was all Orediggers for their first victory at the final site.
Montana Tech led in kills 41-36 and had just 14 errors in the match. The Diggers posted a 0.227 hitting percentage.
The Orediggers had 18 blocks with seven coming from
Bailie Cortner. The senior middle also had seven kills and no errors hitting a 0.412.
Danz and
Nicole Peacock had eight kills each. Peacock also had four blocks and 10 digs.
Katie Wiley and
Gena McMillan had seven kills apiece. Wiley hit 0.308.
Sabrina Hopcroft led the defense with 18 digs.
Caroline Ricks led both teams with 12 kills hitting 0.310 in the match.
Montana Tech's next match is against No. 6 Eastern Oregon tomorrow at 12 p.m. MST.
