HAVRE, Mont- In a match that witnessed a combined total of 170 digs, the Skylights took down the Orediggers of Montana Tech in Havre.
From the very first point, the hustle meter was in the red. Both teams gave all for every point, and some of those points were battles.
The Skylights won the first, 25-23 in a back-and-forth set. Montana Tech found themselves down five points early in the match but were able to erase the deficit and take their first lead at 21-20. The Diggs unfortunately could not close the door on the Skylights, and MSU Northern got the win in the first.
The momentum in the second belonged to the Skylights. With the Orediggers trailing 19-13 that momentum started to shift. The Diggs went on a 7-1 run and tied the set up 20-20. The teams would seesaw back and forth with Northern getting the second set win 26-24.
The third set was controlled by the Orediggers. Leading the entire stretch, they sent the match to a fourth set with a 25-18 win.
Trailing 2-1 the match went to the fourth set, the Diggs looking to send it to a fifth and deciding set with a win. The Skylights had other ideas. Tech's attacks just never could find the floor, Northern showed incredible hustle all night, and sealed the match win with a 25-19 victory in the fourth set.
Montana Tech (19-4, 5-2 Conf) was led by senior
Olivia Muir with a career-high 21 kills. Olivia finished with a hitting percentage of .213.
Maureen Jessop and Olivia Labeau each had nine kills. As a team the Orediggers finished with a .158 hitting percentage.
Freshman
Rhys Layton had 33 assists in the match.
For the Skylights ( 10-12, 2-5 conf.), Alana Graves wrapped up the night with 17 kills, and a .484 hitting percentage. The Skylights hit .195 as a team.
The Orediggers will be on the road again on Saturday as they will be in Billings to battle the Bears of Rocky Mountain College at 6 p.m.
