JOLIET, Ill. – The No. 15 Montana Tech Orediggers won their first road match with a 3-1 victory over University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) at the Big Dog Classic 25-22, 21-25, 25-21, 25-18.
The Orediggers (4-0) and the Patriots (3-2) played a tight first match until the final points. Tech finished with five of the last seven points to win the first frame. Both teams notched 14 kills a piece with minimal errors.
The Patriots jumped on the Orediggers in the second winning their lone set. The Orediggers had just four hitting errors but completed eight kills on 32 swings. The Patriots had 16 kills in the second.
After going up 6-2 to start the third set, the Orediggers turned up their game down the stretch.
Cumberlands led in kills 55-47, but finished the match with 28 hitting errors. Tech had just 13 hitting errors finishing with a .256 hitting percentage.
Taylor Henley led a solid Oredigger defense at the net posting nine blocks. Tech led the match in blocks 16-3.
Henley also led the Orediggers with 13 kills and finished with no errors and a .565 hitting percentage.
Olivia Muir had 12 kills and hit for .250.
Olivia LaBeau added 10 while hitting .381.
Maureen Jessop finished with nine kills.
Jelena Jablanov had 17 digs to lead the team.
Sara Zampedri was the only Patriot in double-digit kills with 16.
Juliet Banks had 16 digs.
Kendall Arnold had a match-high 40 assists.
The Orediggers face Indiana Tech tomorrow at 8 a.m.
