The Orediggers of Montana Tech are now 3-0 at the Frontier Conference Preseason Tournament as they were able to get past a very determined Skylights team Saturday evening. Â The 3-1 victory for the Orediggers bolsters their record to 10-2 on the season, for the Skylights the loss drops their overall record to 7-6. The games played at this tournament do not count toward Frontier Conference play.
Montana Tech won the first set 25-19, in a very back-and-forth set. The only significant run came at about the midway point, with
Emmy Green serving Montana Tech was able to grab 4 quick points, and Northern was never able to recover.
The second set looked like it was going to end quickly. The Diggs jumped out to a 7-2 lead in quick fashion, but Northern answered with their own run tying the set at 8-8. The teams went point for point until they reached 21-all, and with
Sarah Hopcroft serving, Montana Tech rolled out 4 straight points to go up 2-0 in the match.
In the third set the Skylights jumper out early, leading 6-1 before Coach Solomon called a timeout to regroup. Tech did recover and chip away at the lead but they never got closer than 3, and Northern got the third set 25-18.
The fourth set witnessed two large runs and corresponding swings in momentum. The first was right out the gate, the second brought us to the end of the set and match.
Northern came out hot, going up 8-2 quickly. Then the Olivia's got going. Olivia Labeau tallied the next point for the Orediggers with a big kill. Then
Olivia Muir got rolling, tallying three of the next five points for the Diggs. As Northern's momentum waivered, they called a timeout with a 1-point lead, 11-10. The teams went back and forth until the Orediggers called a timeout trailing 20-18. Out of the break the Orediggers outscored Northern 7-1 to close out a 25-21 fourth set, and a 3-1 victory.
Maureen Jessop once again paced the Orediggers with 14 total kills, hitting .176 for the match. Olivia Labeau had a great match hitting .385 with 11 kills, a solo block, and 2 assisted blocks.
Olivia Muir marked 10 kills hitting .241, and
Taylor Henley finished with 8 kills on 22 swings, hitting .364. Setter
Rhys Layton ended with 41 assists, 10 digs, and a solo block.
Northern was led by Alyssa Pretty Weasel with 15 kills, and Alana Graves with 14.
The Orediggers have one match remaining in the Frontier Conference Preseason Tournament, that is tomorrow at 4pm against the Saints of Carroll College.
