Montana Tech Athletics

BUTTE, Mont. -- No. 19-ranked Montana Tech volleyball got back on the winning track Saturday evening with a 23-25, 25-22, 25-21, 21-25, 15-7 win over archrival Carroll on Kelvin Sampson Court.

Setter Rhys Layton paved the way for the Orediggers (14-8, 6-3 Frontier Conference). The sophomore dished out a season-high 56 assists to go with 12 digs, also a season best, for her fourth double-double of the 2024 campaign. Layton also served up six aces.

Megan Benton, Olivia LaBeau, and Kinnidi Willmore contributed 13 kills apiece for Tech, and LaBeau controlled the Carroll hitters with six blocks. Freshman Brooklynn Hayes had a career-best 30 digs, and graduate student Jelena Jablanov added 20 digs of her own.

The two teams traded points in the early going before four straight Digger points forced a Saints timeout with the score 12-8 in the first. Trailing 16-11, Carroll (15-8, 3-6) ripped off an 11-4 run to take the lead. Montana Tech rebounded to tie the set at 22-all, but the Saints took three of the final four points for the first set victory.

The Diggers fell behind early in the second set but rallied with a 4-0 run to take the lead midway through. With the set tied at 16, a Willmore kill started a run of three straight points that gave Tech a lead it never relinquished.

Montana Tech showed its toughness again in the third. Trailing 20-19, Abby Clark spiked a kill to spark a 6-1 run that gave the Diggers a 2-1 lead in the match. LaBeau and Willmore teamed up for a block that sealed the set.

After Carroll took the penultimate set, the fifth was all Tech. Layton's ace put the exclamation point on a 5-1 run that helped the Diggers take control of the match. Back-to-back kills by Benton and freshman Piper Jette sealed the match for Tech.

The Diggers will be back in action on the road Thursday for a date with Montana State-Northern. First serve in Havre is scheduled for 7 p.m.
