BUTTE -- Montana Tech's volleyball team opened up the Big Sky Volleyball Challenge with a clean sweep of Indiana University East, 25-23, 25-13, 25-18, Thursday afternoon at the Butte Civic Center.
Payton Treadwell led the Orediggers (3-1) with 12 kills,
Rhys Layton added a team-best 22 assists, and
Brooklynn Hayes picked up 13 digs in the win. Montana Tech was super efficient on offense, hitting .364 (46-for-99) through the match.
The Orediggers fell behind in the early going, 6-3, before embarking on a 9-2 run to take the advantage. The visiting Red Wolves (1-2) retook the lead at 14-13, and the teams traded blows for the remainder of the first set. It was Tech, however, with the last say. The Orediggers scored three of the final four points to win the opener, 25-23.
The second was all Montana Tech. The Orediggers raced out to a 12-1 advantage and took the set easily behind six kills from Treadwell.
Treadwell and
Talan Dodson paced the Orediggers in the clincher with four kills apiece.
The win was Montana Tech's first sweep of the young season after going to five sets in each of the campaign's first three matches.
The Orediggers will allow other teams to compete during Friday's two-court action at the Butte Civic Center before returning to action Saturday with a pair of matches. Tech will take on Arizona Christian and 9 a.m. before squaring off with Ottawa (Ariz.) at 3 p.m.
