Tech Runs into Wolves

Box Score Salem, Ore. — The All-Tournament-worthy efforts of Adam Greger were not enough to pull Montana Tech past Western Oregon.

The Orediggers fell 73-57 to NCAA Division II Western Oregon in the championship game Saturday night of the Capital City Classic non-conference college men's basketball tournament.

Greger, a true freshman from Florence, came off the bench to score 11 points and pull down six rebounds. The display came after Friday night's 79-74 Montana Tech win over Willamette in which Greger scored 18 points.

“I thought our guys really fought hard,” Oredigger head coach Aaron Woliczko said after the Saturday contest. “(The Wolves) had really good size in the post and so it was hard score down low. And, we didn't shoot well from the 3-line, only 16 percent.

“Hopefully, we improve the percentagbe as the season goes on.”

A bright spot, too, for Montana Tech was a 15-for-21 performance at the foul line. Western Oregon connected on 7 of its 9 tries from the stripe.

“We did a good job on getting fouls,” Woliczko said. “Our boys attacked off the dribble and got to the free throw line. So, we got one of our goals in trying to make more free throws than the opponent had attempts.

“We did a good job on the attack, but it was hard to score inside against their size. They were 270, 280 (pounds) in the posts.”

James Gehring led the Wolves with 17 points, Blair Wehadon scored 16 and Kyle Long put in 14. The Wolves had a 39-31 advantage on the boards with Jamaal Veal and Kolton Nelson grabbing seven rebounds apiece.

Bryan Bock and Brian Cummings netted eight points each for Montana Tech. Bock, Greger and Trent Thompson snared six rebounds each.

The Orediggers are now 4-3 for the season and will next play on Dec. 7 in Missoula against Montana. Western Oregon improved to 5-1 with the win.
