Box Score Butte-The Orediggers came up just short in the final seconds losing to the Saints 71-69 on Senior Night at Kelvin Sampson Court Saturday.
Montana Tech falls to (10-8, 2-5) and the Saints improve to (10-9, 3-4).
Tech was down by as many as 12 in the first half, but pulled within four at the break 37-33.
Both teams progressed with one another throughout the second half. The Orediggers tied up the game at 64-64 with 3:13 left to play on a tip back from senior
Cole Conway. The Saints would go up by three from an Andy Garland three-pointer with 1:48 to go. Garland would make a pair of free throws on the next Carroll possession to take a five point lead 69-64.
After a missed three-pointer from
AJ Paine, Conway would once again tip in the ball to put the Orediggers down by three with 30 seconds on the clock. Garland would be fouled on Carroll's next possession and hit both free throws to give the Saints a 71-66 lead with 17 seconds to go.
On the next Tech possession Paine would drive the lane and pick up two making it 71-68.
After two free throw misses from Carroll's Tony Dalton, Tech would take the ball back to their end with a one and one foul to
Tyree Haynie as he drove into the paint. He would hit the first shot and miss the second. Conway would attempt the put back, but would miss. Garland would take the foul for Carroll after the rebound.
With five seconds on the clock, Garland would miss both free throw opportunities.
Daniel Simon would grab the rebound and in the final seconds miss the full court shot.
Carroll would pick up the win 71-69.
Tech out rebounded the Saints 33-41. Carroll shot 50% from three-point range on the night and hit 46% from the field. Tech shot 37% field goals on the night.
Ben Cutler would lead Carroll in scoring with 24 and added three rebounds and two assists. Andy Garland scored 22 and grabbed six rebounds.
Four Tech players would hit double figures. Freshman
Adam Greger had 17 points and six rebounds.
Tyree Haynie and
Brian Cummings each had 13 points.
AJ Paine would score 12 points, five assists and a pair of steals.
Dan Simon grabbed 12 rebounds and
Cole Conway had 11.
The Orediggers are on the road next week when they travel south to Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho on Thursday February 2nd.
