Diggers down Vikings, 89-41

Box Score BUTTE, Mont. - The Montana Tech Orediggers opened up their 2014-15 campaign with a 89-41 victory over University of Alberta-Augustana Friday night.

Montana Tech's stifling defense held the Vikings to 28.6 percent from the field on only 14 field goals and forced 24 turnovers.

Tech (1-0), were led by Adam Greger who had a game-high 21 points. Sophomore forward Paul Engstrom had a career night with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Connor Gusdal paced the Vikings (0-1) with 12 points and five boards.

It was all Diggers from the opening tip as they jumped to an early 7-0 lead. UAA pulled within three at 12-9, but that was as close as they would get in the game. Tech would go on a 22-4 run to end the half highlighted by a Brandon Rydberg three pointer at the buzzer. The Diggers headed to the locker room with a 48-21 lead.

Tech continued to pour it on in the second half connecting on 17 field goals. The Digger bench also came alive as freshman Flemming Okeke notched in 11 points and pulled down seven boards in his first game in a Digger uniform. Tech shot 42.5 percent from the field in the second half and held the Vikings to just six field goals.

Tech returns to the hardwood on Saturday October 11th when they host Concordia University College of Alberta at 7:30 p.m.
 
Notes: Tech has now won four straight season openers…Paul Egnstrom had his first double-double of his career…..The last time Tech won by 40 was on 12/2011 against Walla Walla (95-46)….The last time Tech held an opponent under 30 percent was on 12/19/10 in a win over The King's University (.244).
