Box Score HAVRE, Mont. – Montana State Northern evened the score Saturday afternoon defeating Montana Tech 37-34 in a back and forth battle.
Northern got on the board first when Zach McKinley scored on a 40 yard dash. But defensive back
Andre Cornell blocked the extra point returning it for a two-point score for the Orediggers. Northern led 6-2 at that point.
Dawson Reardon connected with
Clay Cavender for a 45 yard strike, his first of two on the day, giving Tech a 9-6 lead.
Northern scored the next 17 points on a pair of McKinley touchdown runs and a field goal taking the score to 23-9.
The Orediggers refusing to give up in the first half, nearly evened the score after Reardon connected with
Alec Bray and
Andre Cornell for a pair of touchdowns. The wind, a major factor for both teams all afternoon, canceled both PAT tries. The Diggers trailed Northern 23-21 going into halftime.
Tech continued to score adding 13 more points on Cavender's second touchdown reception of the day and a
Pat Hansen touchdown. The Orediggers led 34-23 in the third quarter.
But Northern scored the final two touchdowns of the game with Northern's Travis Dean connecting with Trevor Baum and Jake Messerly.
Pat Hansen had his best game of the season racking up 180 yards on 31 carries.
Reardon drove the scoring with his four touchdown passes to three different receivers.
McKinley had a big game of his own finishing with 190 yards on 21 carries and three scores.
Montana Tech returns home next Saturday when they host Carroll College.
