Orediggers Stumble Against Saints

Box Score BUTTE, MT - Montana Tech traded shots with their Frontier Conference rival Carroll College but ended up falling 20-12 to the Saints.

It was a defensive symposium in the first half with both squads being held to only a field goal. It was the Diggers who booted their way onto the scoreboard in the opening minutes of the second quarter when Matt Berg connected on a 20 yard field goal.

The Saints drove 69 yards with less than three minutes left in the half and Matt Wiest made a 39 yard field goal with six seconds left to make it three all at the end of the first half.

To start the second half, Montana Tech drove the ball into Carroll College's red zone but settled for another Berg field goal giving the Diggers a 6-3 lead.

The Fighting Saints stole the lead back and gave themselves some breathing room when Kyle Griffith caught two touchdown passes from Mac Roche midway through the second half. Griffith's two TD's gave Carroll College a 17-6 advantage with 12 minutes left to play.

Montana Tech running back Pat Hansen rambled in from one yard out to give the Orediggers hope with seven minutes left, 17-12. Hansen finished the game with 47 yards rushing and 28 yards receiving. The senior needs 230 yards in the next two contests to become Montana Tech's all-time leading rusher.

The Saints would make another field goal to stretch the lead to 20-12 with four minutes left to play. With the Diggers down eight, Montana Tech's drive was stopped when Dawson Reardon was picked off by the Saints.

Carroll College ran out the clock to collect their sixth win in a row, and improve to 6-1. Montana Tech drops to 1-7 on the season.

Tommy Peterson led the Digger defense that played a fierce game causing three turnovers. The senior linebacker has a career high 10 tackles and two sacks.

The Diggers hit the highway next weekend traveling to La Grande, Oregon to take on the Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon University. That game will kick off at 2 p.m. MST.
