BUTTE, Mont. –
Paul Engstrom's floater with 1.5 seconds remaining lifts the Diggers past Westminster 80-79 Saturday on senior day.
Westminster erased an eight-point Montana Tech lead to take the 79-78 edge off of a Nick Jenson layup with 10 seconds remaining. Head coach
Patrick O'Herron called timeout and drew up a play for Tech. Senior
Brandon Rydberg pushed the ball up the court into a tough Griffin defense. When Tech's play was broken, Engstrom took matters in his own hands driving down the lane and scoring what up would be the game-winning basket. Westminster's last-chance heave fell short clinching the Tech victory.
Tech improves to 15-13 overall and 6-8 Frontier. The victory marks the first time since the 1998-99 season that the Diggers (.536) above .500. Tech's six conference wins are the most since the 2012-13 campaign. However, despite the victory, Tech finishes in seventh place just out of playoff contention.
Engstrom paced the Diggers, who trailed 40-36 at halftime, with a game-high 18 points. Senior
Trent Thompson had 17 points, five rebounds and three assists in his final performance in a Digger uniform. Fellow seniors
Adam Greger and Brandon
Reid Baerlocher added 17 and 13 points respectively in their farewell at the HPER Complex.
Westminster falls to 11-16 overall and 4-10 Frontier in their final year in Frontier Conference and NAIA. The Griffins will venture to the NCAA Division II ranks on July 1
st. Jordan Pryor had 17 points in the Griffin loss.
Saturday's win marks the first time since the 1988-89 season that the Diggers concluded a season with a win. Tech defeated Puget Sound Christion 97-54.
