BUTTE, Mont. – University of Great Falls' Darah Huertas-Vining hit a jumper with 2.5 seconds remaining to lift the the 20
th-ranked Lady Argos to a 71-70 victory past Montana Tech Thursday night at Kelvin Sampson Court.
Tech came out red hot in the first half. The Diggers jumped to a 23-10 lead midway through the first half highlighted by a jumper by
Shayla Mack. UGF battled back and tied up the contest at 31 all with 2:20 left in the half. Nneka Nnadi of Great Falls hit back-to-back shots to give the Lady Argos the 36-33 advantage at the half.
UGF continued to stay hot out of the locker room and extended their lead to 10 at 48-38 via a three pointer from Huertas-Vining. Tech rallied back to tie up the contest at 63 all with 4:37 remaining in the contest. UGF regained the lead at 69-64 but that did not phase the Diggers.
Callee Remsen and DeWit knocked down back-to-back buckets to pull Tech within one (69-68) with 1:02 remaining. Following a Lady Argo miss, Remsen grabbed a huge rebound with 28 seconds remaining to give Tech the ball. On the ensuing possession, Tech's DeWit got fouled and hit both free throws in the one-in-one situation to give the Diggers their first lead since the first half. However, UGF's Huertas-Vining would spoil the moment as she spilt the full court Digger defense and hit the game winning shot.
DeWit led the Diggers (8-15, 0-8 Frontier) with a game- and career-high 21 points and five rebounds.
Martha Dembek added 12 points and seven rebounds.
Shayla Mack went 4-of-5 for 11 points along with five rebounds and three assists in 13 minutes.
Callee Remsen had a solid night with nine points, five assists, three boards and a block in her first start of the season.
Great Falls improves to 19-4 overall, 6-2 Frontier. Nneka Nnadi had a team-high 18 points while Huertas-Vining added 15.
The Diggers continue to look for their first conference win on Saturday when they host MSU-Northern Skylights at 5:30 P.M.
