Tech Falls to No. 4 Westminster, 72-65 in Frontier Semifinals

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Montana Tech women's basketball team's season came to an end Friday night after a 72-65 loss in the Frontier Conference semifinals to top-seeded Westminster Griffins at the Behnken Field House.

Tech finishes their 2014-15 campaign with a 12-19 record. The Diggers reached the semifinals for the first time since the 2010-11 season by winning four out of five games.
The highly competitive first half saw seven lead changes and four ties. Both teams came out shooting the ball equally well with Tech at 53.8 percent and Westminster at 50.0. The Griffins got on the scoreboard first with a three pointer from Amy Krommenhoek. Tech gained their composure as Kabri Emerson's back-to-back field goals tied up the contest at six all.

Both teams went blow-for-blow on the scoreboard throughout the half. Westminster took a 30-34 edge with just under two minutes left but the Diggers used a 7-2 run to close out the half to take the 37-36 advantage at the half.

The Griffins started the second half with a 9-0 run to go up 45-37. Shayla Mack came off the bench to end the run with a layup with under 16 minutes to go. Tech continued to rally back pulling within one at 45-44 of off a Martha Dembek three-point play.

Dembek tied up the contest at 54 all after a mid-range jumper with 8:49 to go. However Westminster's Krommenhoek hit a couple of big shots down the stretch to lead the Griffins to the victory.

Dembek had a team-high 18 points and six rebounds for Tech. Hattie Thatcher played all 40 minutes and had 16 points, five rebounds and three assists. Despite playing just 13 minutes due to foul trouble, senior Kabri Emerson had an 11-point five-rebound performance in her final outing in a Digger uniform. Rachel Farris came up big with eight points, five boards and a block off the bench.

Krommenhoek led all scorers with 22 hitting 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.

The Griffins advance to the Frontier Conference Finals for the third-consecutive year as they will host second-seed MSU-Northern on Monday.
