Box Score BILLINGS, Mont. – The No. 5 Montana Tech Orediggers held off a late charge by (RV) Rocky Mountain College winning 34-28 on Saturday afternoon.
The Diggers jumped ahead 7-0 to start thanks to a big opening play between
Quinn McQueary and
Dion Williams. Starting from their own 25-yard line, McQueary threw a deep ball to Williams for a 75-yard touchdown just seconds into the contest.
Later in the first half, Montana Tech increased their lead when
Quinn McQueary rumbled into the endzone twice from fifteen and two yards out.
Rocky started their second half strong, scoring on the opening possession from the one-yard line on a Mason Melby rush.
McQueary showed off the arm with a pair of passing touchdowns in the third quarter, connecting with
Sean Sullivan and
Chris Kelly in the endzone. The Kelly touchdown put the Diggers ahead 34-7 late in the third.
McQueary was 24-for-37 passing for 327 yards with three touchdowns through the air and two on the ground. The senior signal-caller found seven different receivers on the day.
Dion Williams led the Digger receiving corps with 161 yards, while
Chris Kelly added 87 yards and
Sean Sullivan caught six passes for 31 yards.
Jed Fike continued his dominant ground game rumbling for 142 yards on 26 carries averaging 5.5 yards per carry.
The Tech defense was led by
Zack Morris who registered seven tackles,
Brock Polley and
Danny Mannix added six takedowns. Mannix also recovered two fumbles for the Diggers.
Connor Wines registered the lone sack of the day along with five tackles.
Montana Tech returns to Bob Green Field next Saturday when they host Eastern Oregon at 1 p.m. MST. Montana Tech will be celebrating Hall of Fame Weekend.
