BUTTE, Mont. – The No. 21 Montana Tech football team made a surge in the final minutes against (RV) Rocky Mountain but came up just short 28-20.
The Battlin' Bears (2-1) handed the Orediggers (2-1) their first loss of the season.
Jet Campbell hit
Blake Counts for a 6-yard touchdown with 2:11 to play in the game to bring the score to 28-20 in the final minutes.
The Battlin' Bears retained possession after an onside kick. The Orediggers forced the Bears to punt and starting their final chance to score at their own 15-yard line with 1:19 to go in the game.
The Orediggers started the comeback drive moving the ball to the Bears 25-yard line after Campbell scrambled his way on a 26-yard run. Campbell's next pass was intercepted by Rocky's Jack Cline to finish the game.
The Orediggers had five turnovers in the game including three lost fumbles.
Campbell finished the game with 207 yards passing and completing 19 for 37 on the day. The senior finished with 94 yards rushing and ran in the other Tech touchdown in the second quarter.
Counts had 85 yards rushing on 15 attempts averaging 5.7 yards a carry.
Trevor Hoffman led the team with seven receptions and 63 yards receiving.
Kyle Torgerson had six catches for 54 yards.
Wyatt Alexander finished with three catches for 59 yards.
Keyshawn James-Newby led the Orediggers with 10 tackles.
Ben Windauer had nine stops.
Brandon Morely and Naoiki Harmer had eight tackles each and Harmer blocked a PAT attempt by the Bears. The Orediggers also blocked a field goal attempt by Rocky in the second half.
The Rocky offense did make many mistakes losing just one fumble.
Nathan Dick finished with 149 yards completing 17 of 26 with a touchdown. Dick also rushed 18 times for 67 yards and two touchdowns.
Zach Wilcox rushed 20 times for 81 yards and caught four passes for 40 yards and one receiving touchdown.
Brail Lipford led the Rocky defense with nine tackles and Nolan McCafferty had eight.
Montana Tech travels to Dillon next weekend when they face Montana Western.
