KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The No. 4 Montana Tech men's basketball team is moving on to the next round upsetting No. 1 William Penn (Iowa) 79-78 in overtime.
The Orediggers (29-4) are now 5-0 in overtime games this season with the latest victory as the only game not on their home court.
The Statesmen (30-4) are held out of the next round of eight teams again having not moved past the Round of 16 in the last four seasons.
Camdyn LaRance hit the go-ahead free throw knocking down both attempts with 24 seconds left on the clock. LaRance went 3 for 4 from the free throw line in overtime and finished 6 for 8 in the game. LaRance had 14 points, six rebounds, and three steals on the night.
Michael Ure came through in the second half. Ure got in foul trouble early in the game playing just five minutes in the first half. But the fresh legs in the second half was just what the Orediggers needed. Ure had 16 points in the second half including 13 in under five minutes. Ure finished with 19 points, three rebounds, and two blocks.
Scoring was slow at the beginning of the game and the Orediggers opened with a 9-6 lead just under the 15-minute mark. The Statesmen went on a 11-4 run hitting a pair of threes moving ahead 17-11 with 11:27 left in the half.
Tech came back with a 9-4 run of their own over the next three and a half minutes capped off by a steal and a
Hayden Diekhans dunk giving the Orediggers a brief 21-20 advantage.
After Eddie Daley tied the game and put the Statemen up 23 on a pair of free throws, William Penn rattled off nine more points, to go up 32-22, their largest lead of the half, with 3:14 to play. Muneer Newton had seven points during the run finishing with nine in the half to lead William Penn.
The Statesmen took a 33-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Statesmen had 13 turnovers in the first half. William Penn led Tech at the boards 27-20.
William Penn shot 37.5% in the first half and hit 5 of 15 from beyond the arc.
The Orediggers had an uncharacteristic nine turnovers while shooting 10 of 36 from the field and went 2 for 12 from deep.
Tech had only four turnovers in the second half and William Penn finished with 20 in the game.
Bridger Larson led Tech in the half with six points and four rebounds.
Muneer Newton had nine points and eight rebounds to lead the Statesmen. Malik Edwards had eight rebounds before the break. The Statesmen, who led the nation in rebounds, finished with a 59-44 advantage at the boards in the game.
The Orediggers were pulling close to the Statesmen when
Asa Williams dished the ball to Diekhans for a layup pulling within five 45-40 at the 15:10 mark in the second half. But the Statesmen widened the gap again going on a 9-1 run putting the margin at 54-41 with 13:23 to play.
Tech rallied back with a 14-6 run tying the game for the first time in over 16 minutes. The score was tied at 55 with 9:39 left in the game.
William Penn wasn't done yet. Daley had six straight points finishing with a dunk and Malik Edwards hit a three capping off a 9-3 run putting the Stateman back up 64-58 with just under six minutes left in the game.
Charging back again, Diekhans netted six points on a jumper and a pair of layups leading
Tech on a 10-2 run. Williams hit a three putting the Orediggers ahead 68-66 with 2:15 to play.
Chanze Cruesoe hit a layup with 1:30 left and Ure came through again in the second half following up with a three to put Tech up 71-68 with 1:03 left.
After Cruesoe hit another jumper putting the Statesman down by one, the Orediggers missed at the other end.
A foul after Daniel Autry missed on a three pointer in the final seconds sent Daley to the line. Daley missed the first attempt but made the second with just seconds left sending the game to overtime.
Overtime didn't disappoint like the end of regulation with both teams answering before the game came down to free throws.
Tech shot 48.7% in the second half and finished shooting 39% from the field. The Orediggers hit just 7 of 23 three-point attempts and went 12 of 16 from the line.
Williams had 17 points including a three putting Tech up early in overtime. Williams finished with seven rebounds and four assists.
Diekhans had 16 points, nine rebounds, three blocks, and three steals.
Chrishon Dixon led Tech with eight rebounds.
The Statesman finished shooting 36.4% from the field and went 9 of 20 from deep. They made 13 of 20 from the free throw line.
Daley led the team with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Newton had only one point after halftime finishing with 10 and 12 rebounds.
Montana Tech faces Ottawa University of Arizona on Wednesday at 2 p.m. MST.
