BUTTE, Mont. -- Olivia LaBeau collected 20 kills and four blocks,
Rhys Layton had another double-double, and the No. 19-ranked Montana Tech volleyball team rolled past rival Carroll College Wednesday, 25-15, 25-20, 21-25, 25-19, on Kelvin Sampson Court.
It was the fourth-straight win for Montana Tech (17-8, 9-3 Frontier Conference), which also got 17 kills from
Kinnidi Willmore and 12 from
Piper Jette. Layton, the reigning NAIA national setter of the week, tallied 54 assists and 10 digs for her fourth double-double in a six-match span.
Austin Long led the back row with a career-best 25 digs, leading four Orediggers with double-digit digs.
Jelena Jablanov and
Emmy Green had 16 and 15 digs, respectively.
Montana Tech took control of the match early. The Diggers opened the match on a 6-3 run powered by Green's strong service and never trailed the remainder of the first set. LaBeau had six of her match-high 20 kills in the opener, and the senior put down six more in the second set as Tech led early and clung on for the 25-20 win.
Carroll denied its host the sweep in the third, storming back from a six-point deficit with a 7-0 run to take a 17-16 advantage. The Saints won 15 of the set's final 20 points.
The Orediggers recovered quickly in the fourth, jumping out to a 10-5 lead that forced a Carroll timeout. The Saints fought back to tie the set at 16-all, but kills by Willmore and Jette got Tech back on track. Leading 19-18, the Diggers finished the set and match on a 6-1 run.
Elizabeth Heuiser and Rachael Stacey led the way for Carroll with nine kills each.
The victory kept Montana Tech in a tie for first in the Frontier Conference standings. The Diggers and No. 13 Providence sport identical 9-3 league records. Frontier play continues for Montana Tech at home Saturday against Rocky Mountain College. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m.
