BUTTE, Mont. -- Karson Peffer and
Connor Michaud scored 16 points apiece off the bench to lead the No. 6-ranked Montana Tech men's basketball team past King's (Alberta), 108-60, Saturday afternoon on Kelvin Sampson Court.
The pair led six Orediggers (12-1) in double-figure scoring.
Michael Ure joined in with 11 points, while
Keeley Bake,
Hayden Diekhans, and
Levi Torgerson scored 10 each. With his 11, Ure eclipsed the 1,000-point mark on his Montana Tech career, becoming the 13th player in program history to accomplish that feat.
Michaud logged his first-collegiate double-double, adding a team-best 12 rebounds. Torgerson dished out a team-leading five assists, and Diekhans led the defensive effort with four steals and a block.
The game was close at its outset. Tech jumped out to an early narrow lead, but the Eagles quickly cut it back to one possession and kept it there for the early part of the first half. The Diggers earned some breathing room with a 14-2 run that made the score 30-17 with 8:12 to go in the half.
It was smooth sailing from there. The Orediggers took a 54-31 lead into the half and, behind 10 second-half points from Michaud, grew the lead to insurmountable territory in the second stanza.
Jonathan Barwegen led King's (2-9) with a game-high 26 points.
Prior to the game, Montana Tech honored the 2023-24 men's basketball team, unveiling its Frontier Conference championship banner in the rafters above Kelvin Sampson Court. The 2024 league title was the third straight for the Oredigger program.
Montana Tech will start its quest for a fourth-consecutive Frontier title in the new year, beginning conference play Saturday, January 4 at Rocky Mountain College. Tip in Billings is scheduled for 4 p.m.
