Orediggers Fall to the Lions in Five, Willmore Sets New Record

Kinnidi Willmore sets a new school record with 30 kills

WAXAHACHIE, Tex.- Day one of the Texas Two-Step Volleyball Tournament had the Orediggers of Montana Tech on the court for a pair of games. The first matchup was against the host Nelson University.

The Lions of Nelson (Formerly SAGU) are a somewhat familiar opponent for the Orediggers, as they were a part of last year's Big Sky Volleyball Challenge in Butte. The two teams played on Kelvin Sampson Court a year ago, with the Orediggers coming out on top 3-1.

The Lions were able to exact some revenge for that loss, taking down the Orediggers 3-2 earlier today.

Nelson jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first, then stretched that lead out to eight points (9-1). Tech would make a few runs, but the Lions were able to keep the lead around seven points, until the Diggs went on a 7-2 run to tie the first set at 24 all. The two teams would exchange points, and neither team able to put it away until Mayson Moore closed out the first set with a service ace, giving the Orediggers an incredible 36-34 win in the first.

Nelson would respond winning the second 25-23, and then the third 25-19.

The fourth set belonged to the Orediggers, winning 25-18. Kinnidi Willmore had seven kills in the fourth set alone, Piper Jette with four in that frame.

The fifth and deciding frame was a back-and-forth affair. The Lions led 10-9, and then went on a big four point run, to jump out to a 14-10 lead. The Orediggers then took control, scoring six straight points and grabbing a 15-14 lead.

Unfortunately for the Orediggers, the final run of the match belonged to the home team, as they scored the final three points and took the fifth, 17-15.

In the loss, Montana Tech (6-2) has a new record in the books, and it's a big one. Kinnidi Willmore finished the match with 30 kills on 62 swings. The single-game kill record had stood for 20 years, as Collette Phillips had 29 kills in a match in 2004, that mark is now second best, and Kinnidi's tally goes to the top of the list. Kinnidi finished hitting .403, she also is credited with one service ace, two blocks and 14 digs.

Olivia Labeau continued her strong fall, getting 14 kills while hitting .303. Piper Jette, and Alexis Umland each tallied eight kills.

Sophomore setter Rhys Layton finished with 55 assists, one off of her personal record.

Bailee Alexander led the Lions (3-2) with 22 kills, Caroline Boone was next with 11.

Game two for the Orediggers is against Texas A&M- Texarkana, with two more matches scheduled for Saturday.
