Orediggers Ground the Eagles in Texas

Montana Tech takes down Texas A&M-Texarkana in straight sets

WAXAHACHIE, Tex- Match two of the Texas Two Step Volleyball Tournament went a little 'smoother' for the Orediggers of Montana Tech, after falling 3-2 to Nelson University in a marathon of a first match. The second opponents were the Eagles of Texas A&M – Texarkana.

The Eagles started the match with a pair of nice runs, jumping out to a 3-1 lead, followed quickly by a 7-4 lead. Unfortunately for them, they were the only runs they would see in the first set. After exchanging points to a 23-21 Eagles lead, the Orediggers would score five of the last six points and win the first 26-24.

The second set belonged to Montana Tech, 25-15. Olivia Labeau led the Diggs with six kills in the second set.

The third looked like it was going to go to the Eagles. They led 3-1 early, then 6-3. The Diggs would go on a run to tie it at six. Over the next 16 points, the Eagles would jump out to an eight-point lead (18-10). Tech would continue to fight, slowly trimming the lead from eight down to five. Then to two. A big kill by Kinnidi Willmore would bring the score to 23-21 Eagles. The Eagles would then push the score to set point, going up 24-21.

Coach Brian Solomon was able to manufacture some late game magic, as the Diggs scored the last five points of the match, winning 26-24. Willmore two kills over those final five points.

The Orediggers were led by Olivia LaBeau with 16 kills on 32 swings. Olivia also put up three blocks, and grabbed two digs. Right behind her was Kinnidi Willmore had 14 kills, while swinging .273.

Rhys Layton led the digs in assists with 39 over the three-set match, while Jelena Jablanov and Emmy Green were neck and neck for digs, with Emmy getting 14, and JJ with 13.

Kaitlyn Cabral led the Eagles (2-5) with 13 kills on 42 swings.

With the win, Montana Tech runs their record to 7-2 overall. They will be back in action for another pair of games, the first against Texas Wesleyan at 8 AM, followed by Bethel College at 1:30 PM.
