HELENA, Mont.- The Orediggers of Montana Tech wrap up a 2-0 road trip, with a 3-1 (15-25, 25-17. 26-24, 27-25) win over the Saints of Carroll College.
Carroll College ( 11-3, 1-2 conf.) jumped out early, hitting .326 and grounding 17 kills in the first set to stroll to a 25-15 win. It felt like all the momentum in the building was held by the Saints.
The second started far better for the Orediggers, as the two teams traded points until they were knotted up at 12-all.
Kinnidi Willmore would score the point to break the tie, and the Orediggers would never look back outscoring the Saints 13-7 to win the second 25-17. The Orediggers would hit .333 as a team in that second set.
The third set was a back-and-forth affair. The Saints jumped out early, leading 3-0 (their longest run in the set, and their largest lead) The Orediggers biggest lead was a four-point advantage when Maysoin Moore hit an ace to put the Diggs up 19-15. The Saints were able to recover some ground, but the Diggs came out on top 26-24. Team numbers displayed just how tight the set was. The Orediggers hit .108, while the Saints finished at .154. The Saints pushed 13 kills through, and the Diggs finished with 11.
The Orediggers started the fourth on fire, jumping out to an early 9-2 lead.
Kinnidi Willmore with three kills over that span. The Saints weren't done. Carroll would go on a 13-8 run to pull within two, 17-15. Senior middle Olivia Labeau would make it a 20-15 lead with her 13
th kill of the match. A very intense fourth set would continue to heat up, as the Saints tied it up 24-all. Back-to-back attack errors would see the score tied at 25-all, before
Kinnidi Willmore and Olivia Labeau would put it on ice with a pair of aces.
The Orediggers (8-5, 2-1 conf.) were led by Willmore with 17 kills in the match, hitting .277. Right behind her was Olivia Labeau with 16 kills, while hitting an incredible .429. Also in double figures was Senior
Megan Benton who put up 10 kills. Jenela Jablanov led the Diggs with 22 digs, and setter
Rhys Layton put up 45 assists to lead the Orediggers to the win.
The Saints had two players with 13 kills each, Elizabeth Heuiser and Lauren Heuiser. Setter Hannah Schweikert put up 44 assists.
The Orediggers are back on the road Thursday at the University of Providence. The first serve is scheduled for 7PM.
