HELENA, Mont. -- Last week, Montana Tech track & field freshman
Matthew Moreni knocked off another couple of program records. This week, Moreni earned Frontier Conference men's track athlete of the week accolades for that performance.
The Helena native made his collegiate outdoor debut in record-breaking fashion, popping off a 21.24-second 200-meter dash at MSU Billings' Yellowjackets Open Thursday afternoon. He was fifth in the event, but his converted time of 21.31 topped the Montana Tech program record and ranked 16th in the NAIA.Â
He and teammates
Jakob Webinger,
Will Wagner, and
Drake Schlachter also combined to win the 4x100m relay in 41.78 seconds, a program-best by more than half a second.Â
Moreni followed that performance with the second-fastest 400m hurdles in Oredigger lore Saturday at University of Montana's Al Manuel Invitational. He covered the distance in 54.97 seconds for a runner-up finish in the race and the 23rd-fastest time in the country.Â
It's the second-career Frontier athlete of the week award for Moreni, who won indoor track athlete honors February 11. He was one of three Orediggers to win a Frontier award for the week, joining women's field athlete of the week Abby Clark and women's track athlete Ayla Janzen.Â
Montana Tech will continue its 2025 outdoor season with a late addition to the schedule, heading to Helena Saturday for Carroll's Fighting Saints Open.
