MAYVILLE, N.D. -- Halle Moomaw put down 12 kills,
Payton Treadwell added 10, and the Montana Tech volleyball team opened up Frontier Conference play Friday with a 26-24, 25-18, 25-22 sweep of Mayville State.
Rhys Layton distributed a team-best 26 assists for the Orediggers (6-1, 1-0 Frontier), and
Brooklynn Hayes collected 11 digs.
Montana Tech found itself in trouble in the early going. The Comets jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first set before the Orediggers found their feet. Tech came back to tie the set at 12, and it was a dogfight from then on. The teams battled to a 24-all tie before a Hayes service ace and a Comets attack error won Tech the set.
The Orediggers looked to be in control of the second set early, but MSU came back to knot the score in the middle going. Back-to-back kills by Treadwell kicked off a 7-1 run that put Montana Tech squarely in control.
Tech jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the third and never looked back, cruising to the sweep.
The victory was Montana Tech's sixth-straight.
Heley Johnson led Mayville State with eight kills.
Montana Tech will head to Valley City State Saturday for the second match of its roadtrip. First serve with the Vikings is set for 1 p.m. Central, noon Mountain.
