Mountaineers Too Much for Diggers

Eastern Oregon's Sampson Unstoppable

Hansen Getting Wrapped up at the Line
Box Score Butte, MT - The Eastern Oregon Mountaineers and Kevin Sampson were just too much for the Orediggers on Saturday night at Alumni Coliseum. After rushing 100 yards and defeating Tech last year in La Grande, Sampson topped that effort with 158 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.

A week before, Pat Hansen was the star of the game. The stingy Mountaneer defense held Hansen to 28 yards and the Diggers to a combined 86 yards rushing.

The Oredigger offense put together a successful drive late in the first quarter. Hansen scored a touchdown on a four yard run set up by a 23-yard run from Trent Thomas. But a tough day continued for the diggers. While pushed up against their own goal line, Hansen fumbled in the second quarter back into their own end zone. The fumble was recovered by Watson Togialua for the Mountaneers and a 14-7 lead. Kevin Sampson and the Mountaneers on a 35 yard run to finish off the first half.

Kevin Sampson proved to be too quick for the Orediggers, scoring twice in the first half on 11 carries for 127 yards. Sampson showed great skill and agility avoiding tacklers and giving the Diggers a frustrating day on defense.

The Mountaneers played tough defense in the second half only giving up 125 yards passing and 26 yards on the ground. Chris Ware, Eastern Oregon's quarterback, evaded the aggressive Digger defense, but was sacked twice in the first half. However, Ware opened the second half with an 83-yard drive connecting with Jake Burroughs for a 14 yard touchdown. Down 28-7, the diggers were feeling the frustrations of a quick and elusive Eastern Oregon team.

Schwarzkopf scored on a quarterback keeper late in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough. The speedy work of Sampson proved too much for the Diggers Saturday night. The Diggers will meet Eastern Oregon again October 15th, in La Grande.
