Basketball Preview

Montana Tech heads to Billings to take on the Rocky Mountain Battlin' Bears Saturday night. The women's teams play the first game at 5:30 PM at the Fortin Center. This is the final game of the season for the Orediggers.

The Lady Diggers (9-16, 4-9) enter Saturday's game losing three in a row after Thursday's loss to Carroll. Tech currently sits in the sixth position in the Frontier Conference. Head Coach Kerie DePell is 2-7 against the Bears all-time and has lost the last three meetings. Rocky (18-10, 7-6) has locked up at least the fourth spot in the Frontier, but is coming off a loss to Western at home.

Earlier this year, Tech could not overcome a twelve point deficit from the first half and took the loss to the Bears at Kelvin Sampson Court.

Tech is currently scoring 62.5 points per game on 39.4-percent shooting. They rank sixth and seventh in those categories in the Frontier Conference. From beyond the arc, the women are shooting 30.9-percent and rank sixth in the conference and 41st nationally.

Senior Tabitha Tomlinson is second in the conference in assists (4.3) and ranks 18th nationally.

Freshman Mandy Machinal is leading the 'Diggers in points per game with 13.8. She also picks up 2.9 boards, 1.8 assists and 1.2 steals a game. Machinal is ranked fourth in the conference in scoring.

On defense, Tech is holding their opponents to 65.3 points per game on 38.7-percent shooting. They are ranked sixth and seventh respectively. Tech ranks last in three-point percentage on defense with their opponents shooting 34.4-percent.

Kelsey DeWit is currently second in the conference in blocked shots (1.9) and 13th nationally. The sophomore center also leads the Orediggers in rebounds (6.96) and ranks seventh in the conference.

The Oredigger men (11-13, 3-10) are coming off two straight losses with the last one coming at Carroll on Thursday. Tech is holding the last spot in the Frontier Conference. Second year head coach Aaron Woliczko is still looking for his first win against the Bears (12-16, 5-8). Tech has not won against the Bears since 2010.

Tech played in their worst game of the year against Rocky earlier this season. Even though Tech played a great game, the 'Diggers had a difficult time shooting around Rocky's tall post players. Tech shot 41.9-percent from the field, but Rocky outshined hitting 49.1-percent of their shots and outrebounding the 'Diggers 42-29.

The Orediggers are currently ranked last in scoring offense with 65.4 points per game on 41.3-percent shooting. From beyond the arc, Tech is hitting 31.2-percent. Tech is ranked third in free throw percentage hitting 73-percent from the line. They are ranked sixth in NAIA Division I in that category.

Freshman Adam Greger is leading the Orediggers in scoring with 12.4 points per game on 47.9-percent shooting.

Greger ranks third in the conference and 22nd nationally in free throw percentage (82.4-percent).

Senior AJ Paine is leading the conference in free throw percentage (83.6-percent). He also leads the team in assists (2.6) and steals (1.44).

On the defensive side of the ball, Tech has held opponents to 65.8 points per game on 43.9-percent shooting. They are ranked fourth in the conference in both of those categories. Also ranked fourth, they are holding opponents to 32.7-percent shooting from three-point range.

This is the final game of the season for Montana Tech before the Frontier Conference Tournament starts February 29th.
