Westminster Women Drop Tech

Box Score
SALT LAKE CITY — Shelby Ellsworth scored 16 poins, and Nicole Yazzie and Cydney Tibbitts tallied 15 apiece as Westminster topped Montana Tech 62-48 on Saturday in a Frontier Conference college women's basketball game played in the Behnken Field House.

“We defended really well,” Montana Tech head coach Kerie DePell said. “Westminster's one of the best in the country at shooting the 3, and as a team, we did a really nice job getting out there and making them do something different.”

Westminster was ranked 19th in the latest NAIA Division I poll.

The Griffins took a 32-22 halftime lead and benefitted from self-disipline. They put the Orediggers on the foul line just once.

Bryn Hasquet had a good game — she went 1 for 1 from the free throw line,” DePell said. “That's something we're trying to improve. We want to turn our spot-up shooters into drivers and add another dimension to their game. It's a slow process, but we're working on it.”

Hasquet wound up leading the team with 12 points. Dannii Devenny scored 10 and also had five rebunds, three assists and two steals.

“Erica Jenkins led us on a nice run in second half, brought us within six,” DePell said. “She was hitting shots and causing turnovers. She did a nice job with her minutes out there.

“Danni had a nice complete game. She played great on defense and rebounded well. She also hit some nice floating
jumpers on offense.”

Jenkins finished with seven points in 13 minutes of play. Brianne McClafferty had nine points, going 3-for-5 from 3-point distance.

“Overall, this is a tough place to play,” DePell said. “But when you go up against a nationally ranked program full of juniors and seniors, and compete with a team of freshmen and sophomores, you're doing all right.”

The Orediggers will be home next weekend for a pair of Frontier Conference games. They'll play Great Falls on Friday, and Montana State-Northern on Saturday.
