BUTTE, Mont. – The NAIA's top pass offense came to Butte Saturday and the Orediggers held them in check. But Southern Oregon's rushing attack got the best of Tech defeating the Orediggers 31-10.
Southern Oregon (6-4, 6-3) and Montana Tech (4-5) headed to the playoffs last season, but this year was a different story for both teams.
Tech's lone touchdown in the game came from
Pat Hansen in the first quarter in a handoff from
Clay Cavender in the
Wildcat formation. Hansen was held in check gaining just 59 yards on 20 carries. He did eclipse the 1,000 yard mark on the season for the third straight year.
The Orediggers played three different players at quarterback in the game. Senior
Brian Schwarzkoph started in his last game as an Oredigger with sophomore
Herman Tapley taking fewer snaps. Schwarzkoph completed 13 of 29 for 144 yards and ran for another 51 yards on 10 attempts. Tapley went 8 of 15 for 69 yards.
Zach Kinney broke the single season reception record in the game. The old record of 72 by Casey Kelly was set in 2006.
Kinney need three catches to break the mark; he finished with 5five for 30 yards.
Mike Touzinsky led the defense with 14 total tackles.
Senior
Ryan Jones had nine tackles.
Melvin Mason led the Raiders with 162 yards rushing on 17 attempts. He had one rushing score and a receiving touchdown. He caught nine passes for 56 yards.
