BUTTE, Mont. – Machinal's jumper with 5.2 seconds left feel shot as the women's basketball team fell to no. 21 Carroll College, 62-60 Saturday night in front of a capacity crowd.
In a contests that saw 11 ties and 10 lead changes, Tech (8-12 overall, 0-5 Frontier) came out firing in the first half. Carroll tied up the contest at 16 with 9:33 remaining in the half. The Diggers rallied behind
Hattie Thatcher and Many Machinal to go on a 16-5 run to take the 32-21 advantage with 1:37 remaining. The Fighting Saints hit a free throw to end the run but Tech would take a 32-25 edge going into halftime.
In the second half Carroll hit seven of their first eight going on a 14-7 run tying up the contest at 39. Both teams would go back-and-forth exchanging leads. Tech took the 60-59 lead with 2:53 remaining off a Machinal jumper but Carroll answered with a jumper of their own to regain the lead and they never looked back.
Thatcher had a career-night for the Diggers. The sophomore had a career-high 20 points (14 of which came in the first half) and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. Machinal added 21 points in 37 minutes of action.
Carroll (13-6, 4-2 Frontier) had four players in double figures including Cassidy Hashley who had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Diggers look to get their first conference win Thursday Jan. 29 when they travel to Salt Lake City to face the Griffins of Westminster.
