Saraceni, Orediggers Destroy Saints 42-7

Box Score HELENA, Mont. – The No. 12 Orediggers cruised to victory for the second time this season against the No. 18 Saints. Montana Tech (6-1) wins their third straight 42-7.

The victory marks the first time Tech has defeated Carroll in Nelson Stadium since 2001 and first time defeating the Saints twice in a season since 1999. It was the third loss in a row for the Saints (3-4) and second loss at home this season.

On the opening drive, Tech easily drove the ball 75 yards for the first score of the game. Nolan Saraceni scored from eight yards out on his first touchdown run of the day.
Quarterback Mac Roche's first pass of the game was intercepted by Helena native David Meis on the very next drive. The senior linebacker returned the pick 24 yards for Tech's second touchdown of the game and a 14-0 lead.

The Orediggers changed to the wildcat formation after quarterback Quinn McQueary left the game at the end of Tech's second drive. The wildcat proved successful again for Tech as Saraceni scored on the next two drives on runs of 28 and 80 yards.

Roche connected with Stephen Delaney on a 16 yard strike completing a 64 yard drive for their only score of the game making the score 28-7 with less than two minutes to play in the half.

Montana Tech outgained Carroll 219-108 in the first stanza. The Saint's Roche was sacked three times by Montana Tech in the half, including twice by linebacker Drew Schleeman.

After the team's traded possessions in the second half, Slaten Long's punt was downed on Carroll's two yard line giving the Saints a difficult starting position. On their second try, linebacker Tyler Gavlak forced a Ryan Walsh fumble with Tech recovering on the four yard line.

Not just scoring on the ground, Saraceni connected with Andrew Loudenback for Tech's first passing touchdown of the game increasing their lead 35-7.

The Saints pinned the Orediggers on the one yard line after a 45 yard punt in the fourth quarter. The Orediggers avoided a safety when Saraceni was tackled on the one yard line. On the very next play Saraceni broke a 99 yard touchdown run for the final score of the game 42-7.

The Orediggers outgained the Saints 350-190 in the game.

Saraceni proved unstoppable for the Saints. The junior running back finished with 273 yards on 24 attempts and five total touchdowns. He tied a school record set by Pat Hansen for most points in a game (30) and most touchdowns. His 99-yard dash for a score broke a 42 year old record set by Buddy Walsh.

The Oredigger defensive line was in top form again. Drew Schleeman finished with seven tackles and two sacks. Helena Capital grad Tyler Sanders had four tackles and 2.5 sacks. Meis had six tackles and two tackles for loss in addition to his pick-six.

Defensive back Will Davey snatched his second interception in the last two games.

Montana Tech returns home next week on Halloween. Tech faces Eastern Oregon for the second time. The Mountaineers handed Tech their only loss of the season back in September. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
