Diggers Drop a Pair of Matches to Carroll and UGF

The 20th-ranked Orediggers dropped a pair of matches over the weekend. Tech fell to rival Carroll College 3-2 on Friday and the University of Great Falls slipped by the Orediggers 3-2 on Saturday.

The Saints rallied from a 0-2 deficit to earn the 19-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-8, 15-11 victory Friday night at the PE Center.

The Orediggers had four players with double-digit kills including Sydney Norris who had a match-high 15 kills along with 12 digs. Setter Makenzie Bauck handed out 45 assists and Angie Pancost added 21 digs. Freshman Karina Mickelson continued her strong play with 13 kills.

Carroll won its eighth straight match improving to 11-7 overall and 5-0 in the Frontier. The Saints were led by Emily Sullivan who had 13 kills on the night.

In the neck-and-neck first set, both teams went back-and-forth on the scoreboard. Following a Carroll score, Jordan Danz sparked a Montana Tech 4-0 run to give the Orediggers a 23-18 lead. Tech would then close out the set via a block by Bailie Cortner.

It was a similar story in the second set as both teams seesawed points. With the score tied at 15 all, the Diggers used a 7-0 run highlighted by block assists from Mariah Cooney and Mickelson. The Saints pulled within three at 24-21 however a Mickelson kill from Bauck sealed the second set victory for the Orediggers.

The Saints rallied back to win the third and fourth sets 25-18 and 25-8 tying up the match at 2-2.

In the deciding fifth set, Carroll took a 9-6 lead following a 4-0 run and never looked back. The Diggers made a late push but it wasn't enough as Tech fell 15-11.

For the second consecutive night the Orediggers needed the five sets to decide the match. The Diggers dropped the five-set thriller 23-25, 29-27, 25-22, 18-25, 14-16 Saturday night at the McLaughlin Center.

Sydney Norris registered a double-double for the second straight night with a match- and season-high 19 kills and 13 digs. Makenzie Bauck added 50 assists and 15 digs.

Jordan Danz and Bailie Cortner reached double figures in kills with 14 and 11 respectively.

Madison Wihelm led the Lady Argos (16-7, 2-3 FC) with 28 kills and 20 digs.

Stats for Saturday's match were incomplete.

The Diggers are off next week and are back in action Oct. 15th when they head to Lewiston, Idaho to face the Warriors of Lewis-Clark State.

Notes: Senior Sydney Norris eclipsed the 1,000-kill plateau over the weekend…Tech has played in six matches that went to five sets; Tech is 1-5 in those matches.
