FORT WAYNE, Indiana – The Saint Francis Cougars held the Montana Tech rushing game in check and took advantage of Oredigger turnovers in the 42-20 victory.
The Orediggers totaled just 308 yards of total offense with 160 on the ground.
Running back
Nolan Saraceni had 63 yards rushing on 24 carries. The Frontier Conference Offensive Player of the Year scored twice. Saraceni put the first points of the game on the board with a two yard run on the opening drive. He scored again on a 70 yard reception for the final score of the day.
After Tech scored on the opening drive, the Orediggers forced a Saint Francis three and out. But after giving the ball back to Saint Francis after a Tech punt, quarterback Nick Ferrer completed a 57 yard drive with a 19 yard touchdown pass to Seth Coate to tie the score at 7-7.
Cougar running back Justin Green scored the first of his two touchdowns from two yards out with 10:15 to go in the half giving Saint Francis a 14-7 lead.
At the end of the half, the Orediggers turned to the wildcat.
Clay Cavender scored on a 12 yard scamper capping an 11 play 95 yard drive with 2:24 to play in the first half. The score at half time was 14-14.
Saint Francis completed an 85 yard drive at the start of the second half scoring on a PJ Dean 7 yard run.
The next three Tech possessions ended in turnovers. Quarterback
Quinn McQueary threw two interceptions and
Dion Williams Jr. fumbled on a kickoff return. Saint Francis took advantage of all three turnovers scoring each time. The Cougars led 42-14 at the end of the third quarter.
Saraceni's touchdown reception was the lone score of the fourth quarter.
McQueary, who returned from injury, went 12 of 18 for 148 yards and three interceptions.
Senior wide receiver and wild cat specialist
Clay Cavender led the Diggers with 81 yards on the ground and one touchdown. He also caught 5 passes for 38 yards.
Saint Francis running back Green ran for 216 yards going over the 200 mark for the second consecutive week. Quarterback Ferrer finished with 221 yards passing and three touchdowns.
Saint Francis (11-0) moves on to the NAIA Football Championship Series Semifinals next Saturday.
Montana Tech's (10-2) season comes to an end, but not without accomplishing a Frontier Conference Title and first post season victory since 2004.
