BUTTE, Mont. – The Orediggers mounted a fourth quarter comeback taking the University of Great Falls into overtime for a 68-64 victory.
Montana Tech (12-13, 6-8) sweeps Great Falls on the season and gets back to winning after dropping their last two.
The Argos took advantage of the Orediggers struggles in the third quarter. Tech trailed by as many as 15 in the third before rallying in the fourth quarter. The Orediggers outscored the Argos 19-8 in the fourth frame.
Rachel Farris hit a short jumper with 1:34 bringing the Diggers within four 51-47. Tough defense by Tech and fouls by Great Falls paved the way to critical free throws by
Hattie Thatcher and
Martha Dembek in the final minute. Dembek hit a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left to send the game into extra time.
Montana Tech used the free throw line to finish off the University of Great Falls in overtime. Thatcher went 8 for 8 from the line as Tech scored 11 of their 17 points in extra time from the charity stripe.
The Orediggers shot 80.8 percent from the free throw line in the game.
Thatcher was a perfect 12 for 12 from the line in the game finishing with 20 points. The senior guard was one assist away from a double-double finishing with nine and seven rebounds.
Kourtney Coverdell had 18 points going 7 for 13 from the field and 3 for 8 from beyond the arc. Two of her three pointers were in overtime.
Dembek had nine points and eight boards. Farris finished with 10 points and five boards.
Stephanie McDonagh led the Argos with 20 points and seven rebounds.
Montana Tech is home again on Saturday night when they host Montana State Northern.
