BUTTE- Montana Tech rallied from down a touchdown with under two minutes left in regulation to defeat No.23 Southern Oregon in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
The Diggers (4-4) found themselves trailing 31-24 with 1:46 left in the game after SOU kicker Marcus Montano nailed a 47-yard field goal. Getting the ball back on their own 25 yard line, the Diggers executed a 9-play 75-yard drive and scored a touchdown with 29 seconds remaining. Oredigger quarterback
Jet Campbell, who threw for 266 yards and four touchdowns, hit
Trevor Hoffman in the back of the endzone from 12 yards out. The
Cody Gagnon PAT tied the game and the Oredigger defense forced overtime.Â
Montana Tech jumped out to a quick 7-0 advantage when
Dion Williams hauled in an acrobatic touchdown pass from Campbell from five yards out. The Diggers added another touchdown and a field goal before halftime on a
Jed Fike one-yard rush and a
Tyler Padilla 28-yard field goal.Â
The Orediggers led by as many as 17 before the Raiders came storming back to take the lead late in the fourth quarter.Â
In overtime, Campbell found Hoffman in the endzone for the second time of the day for the game-winning touchdown. Having to stop SOU, the Diggers forced an incompletion, registered consecutive sacks on second and third down by
Nic Amestoy and
Brock Beede, before batting down the Raiders final pass at the line of scrimmage.Â
Montana Tech was led on offense by
Jed Fike who rushed for 165 yards on 26 carries.
Dion Williams led the Tech receiving corps with eight catches for 122 yards and a touchdown.
Trevor Hoffman caught six passes for 58 yards and two touchdowns while
Sam McCamley hauled in five for 53 yards.
Tanner Osborne scored a touchdown on a 27-yard reception. Â
On defense, the Diggers limited Southern Oregon to a 17-for-37 completion rate and sacked their quarterback a season-high seven times.
Connor Wines had eight tackles, three sacks, and a forced fumble.
Chance Hansen had nine tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss, and a sack.
Justin May and
Tucker Rauthe each recorded seven tackles and
Naoki Harmer added six.
Nic Amestoy had five tackles, two tackles for loss, and a sack while
Brock Beede and
Arthur Flynn each tallied a solo sack.Â
Montana Tech hosts their final home game of the season next Saturday when the Carroll College Fighting Saints come to Butte.Â
