Defense Dominates, Orediggers Runaway in Second Half 35-12

BUTTE, Mont. – With another dominant defensive performance, the Montana Tech Orediggers stifled the Montana Western offense upsetting the Bulldogs 35-12 at Alumni Coliseum.

The No. 22 Orediggers (4-1) held one of the top offenses in the conference to no touchdowns and just 150 yards. The Bulldogs were averaging over 300 yards passing a game, but finished with 87 yards through the air and only eight first downs.

Senior linebacker Carter Meyers led the defense with an outstanding performance. The Cody, Wyoming native finished with 2 sacks, 4 tackles for loss, and batted down a pass. Meyers had 10 total tackles with 8 of them on his own.  

Defensive lineman Arthur Flynn had a sack and six tackles.

Justin May led a secondary that played lights out all game. May finished with 5 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, and broke up 2 passes.

The backfield combination of Tyler Folkes and Blake Counts ran away with the game in the second half. They rushed for 273 yards and three touchdowns. Folkes broke the 100-yard mark for the first time in his career finishing with 190 yards.

Jet Campbell ran in the first touchdown of the game for the Orediggers on a 6-yard scramble. The redshirt sophomore quarterback went 8 of 16 for 159 yards through the air and one touchdown. Campbell connect with Trevor Hoffman for a 43-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.

Hoffman had 5 catches for 120 yards and the touchdown. Hoffman passed the 100-yard mark for the third time this season.

Ninth year head coach Chuck Morrell posted his 50th win tonight.

The victory against Western is the third straight in Butte going back to 2015.

No. 22 Montana Tech travels to Caldwell, Idaho next weekend to face the No. 8 College of Idaho.
