CALDWELL, Idaho- Oredigger freshman
Tavia Rooney had a record-setting afternoon as Montana Tech defeated William Jessop on Friday at the College of Idaho Dominos Classic.
Rooney, a true freshman from Townsend, Mont., broke a 41-year old record held by Wanda Sanders grabbing 22 rebounds in the Oredigger victory. Rooney also scored 11 points to notch her third double-double of her young career.
The Orediggers (6-1) jumped on the Warriors, who also entered the contest with a 5-1 record, early leading 20-12 at the end of the first quarter. A pair of
Mesa Williams' nifty layups near the end of the second quarter stretched the Oredigger halftime advantage to 12 points, 32-20.
Williams also had a big day with 24 points on 8-for-16 shooting and a 6-for-9 performance from three point land.
Brooke Heggie chipped in 8 points and added 7 rebounds while
Mollie Peoples scored 7 points.
Montana Tech led by as many as 22 points in the third quarter before the Warriors tried for a comeback. The Diggers shot just 29 percent from the floor but forced William Jessop into 19 turnovers.
JoeLyn Stirton led the Warriors with 13 points.
Montana Tech improves to 6-1 overall with the victory and plays host College of Idaho on Saturday night at 5 p.m.
