Great Falls, Mont.- The Oredigger men's golf team overcame a 12-stroke deficit to win their first Frontier Conference event in over 10 years.
The Oredigger men, led by
Sean Ramsbacher who was the events medalist after firing a bogey free final round 68 (-3) to shoot a combined 205 (-8) for the event, fired a whopping 281 (-3) in the last round. Montana Tech senior
Trey Hoagland shot a 3-under-par 69 in the final round to climb into 8
thplace for the event while freshman
Matt Hobbs shot an even par 71 to finish 10
th.
Ryan Keenan and
Brady Cady each shot final round 73's to pace the five-man squad.
"Today was a day that I think this team will remember for the rest of their lives," said head coach
Sean Ryan. "They came back from a dozen strokes behind one of the powerhouse teams in the NAIA and proved to themselves and everyone else that Montana Tech golf can not just compete but win any tournament they are a part of. I'm just so proud of them."
The Diggers jumped off to a hot start thanks to early birdies on the opening two holes by senior
Ryan Keenan. Midway through the round, the Diggers had five players at even par or better and were seven-under-par but still a stroke behind No. 9 Rocky Mountain College and Lewis-Clark State. As the back and forth battle made its way to the back nine, the Orediggers got much needed birdies from
Sean Ramsbacher,
Brady Cady,
Matt Hobbs, and
Trey Hoagland on the par-5 16
thhole. Hoagland iced the event with a birdie on his last hole, the 365-yard par-4 1
st, to put Montana Tech ahead of Lewis-Clark State who had jumped Rocky Mountain College in the standing.
"Ryan set a great pace early on in his round and the rest of the team fed off of seeing red numbers on the scoreboard," added Ryan. "The whole team knew that they could win this event and having Trey come up with such a clutch birdie was fantastic."
Montana Tech saw a strong performance from
Bridger Martin who fired a 76 in the final round to finish T-12
th.
Blake Hasquet and
Isaiah Weldon shot a pair of 77's to finish the event at 237 and 238 respectively.
The Oredigger women finished in third place after trailing Carroll College by five strokes entering the final round. The Diggers were led in scoring on the final day by
Lynzee Dexter who fired a 78,
Emily Garden 81, and
Tanna Campbell 81.
Kelsey Parker and Emily also contributed to the teams coring firing 190 and 195 for the event.
Playing as individuals,
Skyler Martin shot a final round 83 to finish 15
thand
Reyla Williams finished T-29
th.
"This was a great tournament for us to get our feet wet, both literally and figuratively, in Frontier Conference play. I was happy with how the team responded to the challenging elements and played their best golf on the last day."
Montana Tech's next event will be the Carroll College Invitational at Green Meadow Country Club in Helena on September 23
