BUTTE, Mont. – The Montana Tech Orediggers opened their home schedule and the annual Copper Game with a 26-10 victory over (RV) the Carroll College Saints.
The Saints (1-1) got on the board first capping a 66-drive with a 19 yard field goal.
The Orediggers (2-0) answered back on their first drive with a 27 yard field goal by
Ryan Lowry. After forcing Carroll to punt on their next drive, Lowry made his second field goal of the quarter with a 14-yard score giving the Orediggers a 6-3 lead after the first quarter. Tech held the lead for the remainder of the game.
After stopping the Saints on a fourth down attempt, quarterback
Jet Campbell scored the first touchdown of the game with a rushing touchdown putting the Orediggers ahead 13-3.
Saints running back Matthew Burgess closed the gap with a 1-yard rushing touchdown of his own making the score 13-10. Burgess finished the game with 80 yards rushing.
Campbell completed a 30-yard touchdown to
Wyatt Alexander at the end of the half giving the Orediggers a 19-10 lead going into halftime.
The Oredigger defense held the Saints scoreless in the second half.
Ben Windauer led the Orediggers with nine tackles including seven solo stops, two tackles for a loss, and a sack. Tech finished with three sacks in the game.
Jordan Washington had five tackles and was in on one of the sacks as wells as one pass breakup.
Keyshawn James-Newby had five tackles and was in on a sack.
Brandon Morley and
Cole Wyant had four tackles each.
Naoki Harmer had three tackles and broke up three passes.
Running back
Kaleb Winterburn completed a 31-yard pass to
Zach Trumble on a trick play in the second half. Winterburn also had 25 yards rushing.
Campbell finished with 232 yard passing and two total touchdowns.
Blake Counts rushed for 78 yards on 18 carries.
Saints quarterback Jack Prka went 9 for 27 and 70 yards passing.
Kyle Torgerson caught five passes for 85 yards.
Trevor Hoffman had four catches for 69 yards.
The Orediggers are off next week before hosting Rocky Mountain on September 17th on Bob Green Field at Alumni Coliseum.
