BUTTE, Mont. -- Hadley Humphreys,
Liv Wangerin, and
Aubrie Rademacher all scored in double figures, and Montana Tech's defense was sparkling as the Orediggers blew past Dickinson State, 68-42, to win Thursday evening's home-opener on Kelvin Sampson Court.
Humphreys scored a team-best 15 points, shooting 5-for-7 from the field, to go with five rebounds to lead the way for Montana Tech (2-1), while Rademacher and Wangerin each scored 14. Rademacher added four steals and four assists to her tally.
Things did not start well for Montana Tech. After Rademacher hit a 3-pointer to get the scoring started, Dickinson State ripped off a 7-0 run. By midway through the second period, the Blue Hawks had extended the advantage to 23-12.
Then the Orediggers woke up. Rademacher's layup with 5:25 remaining started a 22-4 Diggers run to end the half.
Kia Wasson's 3-pointer as time expired gave Tech a 34-27 lead at the half.
The Diggers continued to extend the lead in the second half, buckling down on the defensive end of the floor. DSU managed just 15 points after halftime. Wangerin hit a pair of jumpers early in the third to give Montana Tech its first double-digit lead of the evening, and the Diggers never looked back. Humphreys and Wangerin scored 10 points each after halftime.
Halle Haber grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds for Tech, while
Macy Mayer added four steals to the cause.
DSU's 42 points was Montana Tech's best defensive effort since a December 29, 2023 win over Ambrose in which the Diggers allowed just 41.
Montana Tech will be back in action Friday with a short trip to Dillon, where the Orediggers will take on Southeastern in a 5 p.m. neutral-site game at Montana Western.
