BUTTE, Mont. -- Liv Wangerin scored 14 points,
Avery Carlson added 10 off the bench, and the Montana Tech women's basketball team held off a late charge from No. 23-ranked Providence to win, 62-58, Saturday afternoon on Kelvin Sampson Court.
The win stopped a six-game losing skid against the Argos that dated back nearly two years.
Providence got off to a fast start, beginning the game with a 9-4 run before the Orediggers (12-6, 3-2 Frontier) got their feet under them. Tech fought back to cut the deficit to 16-15 by first quarter's end, and the Diggers took their first lead of the game, 24-22, on
Brooke Badovinac's 3 with 6:15 before halftime.
UP (11-6, 1-4) briefly retook the lead, but seven second-quarter points from Carlson helped Tech into halftime with a 33-29 advantage.
The third quarter was a defensive battle, but Tech managed to earn some separation in the minutes following the halftime break.
Hadley Humphreys' layup at the 3:55 mark gave the Diggers their first double-digit lead of the game, 42-31, and Tech led by seven headed into the fourth.
Providence didn't go away, through. The Argos trimmed the lead to as few as three points late in the contest, but Montana Tech kept its composure and hung on for the win. Wangerin was a big part of that, scoring eight of her 14 in the final stanza.
Humphreys chipped in nine points, six rebounds, and two steals for the Orediggers, while
Aubrie Rademacher celebrated her birthday with eight points and six boards. Wangerin distributed a team-best three assists.
UP's Ashlee Maldonado led all scorers with 19 points, and she also made a game-high four assists. Keanna Salave'a and Monique Carter scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Argos.
With the win, Montana Tech improved to 3-0 against ranked opponents at home this season.
The Orediggers will continue Frontier Conference play at home Thursday with a 5 p.m. contest against MSU-Northern.
