No. 4 football shuts out Mayville State

Montana Tech Athletics

BUTTE -- The No. 4-ranked Montana Tech football team rolled past visiting Mayville State, 51-0, Saturday afternoon on Bob Green Field.

Quarterback Jarrett Wilson accounted for four touchdowns on the day, three passing and one rushing, and Christian Vetter ran for 111 yards and a touchdown on seven carries for the Orediggers.
Montana Tech (8-0, 3-0 Frontier Conference East Division) put the game away early, scoring touchdowns on all six drives of the first half.

On the opening possession of the game, Wilson found Nick Michelotti for a couple of big pass plays, the latter a 25-yard touchdown that got the Orediggers an early lead.

Wilson did the next one with his legs, scoring on a 15-yard run, and then Tech made it 20-0 after defensive end Cole Graham scooped up a Mayville State fumble and took it to the end zone. The Diggers led 20-0 after the first quarter.

In the second, Wilson tossed a pair more touchdown passes — one to Levi Torgerson and another to Derek Pearse — and Wykece Johnson took a 12-yard run to the house. Montana Tech led 41-0 at halftime.

Tech continued to move the ball well in the third, thanks in large part to Vetter. All of his 111 yards came in the second half, and he found the end zone with an 8-yard TD run in the third quarter.

The Orediggers' final score came on a Casey Kautzman 20-yard field goal in the fourth.

The Tech defense held the Comets (5-4, 2-2) without a pass completion and to just 188 total yards. Tech forced four turnovers — the Graham scoop-and-score, a Tyler Kovick fumble recovery, and interceptions by Payton Gonser and Daymon Burns.

Asher Feddes led the defense with 11 tackles, while Tel Arthur and Brett Grange each made seven.

Montana Tech hits the road for Billings to continue Frontier East play next Saturday. Kickoff at Rocky Mountain College will be at 1 p.m.
