BUTTE -- Despite 15 kills from
Payton Treadwell and nine more from
Kinnidi Willmore, the Montana Tech volleyball team fell Friday night, 25-15, 29-27, 25-20, to No. 3-ranked Providence inside Valley Bank Arena.
Things started well for the home team as the Orediggers (10-6, 6-4 Frontier Conference) began the match on a 5-2 run. UP rallied back with a 4-0 run midway through the set to take the advantage, 10-8, and the Argos (17-1, 10-0) never trailed the first set again.
In the second, Providence jumped out to a 7-1 lead before an Oredigger timeout settled the hosts down. Tech stormed back into the lead with a 10-2 run that made it 22-20 in the home team's favor, but UP bounced back. The teams traded set points until the Argos broke a 27-27 tie with a pair of straight points.
The third was close again until the Argos made use of a 6-3 run to sweep the match.
Rhys Layton facilitated the Montana Tech attack with 29 assists, while
Brooklynn Hayes led the back row with 12 digs.
Emmy Green and
Austin Long added 11 digs apiece, and
Abby Clark made four blocks.
Bella Green put down a match-best 15 kills for the Argos, while Bella Thompson made 38 assists and 15 digs for the double-double.
The defeat snapped Montana Tech's eight-match win streak on Kelvin Sampson Court.
The Orediggers will look to start a new home win streak Saturday with a 5 p.m. first serve against MSU-Northern.
