BUTTE -- Montana Technological University and athletic director
Matt Stepan are excited to introduce
David Starcevich as the Orediggers' next head men's and women's golf coach.
Starcevich, a Montana Tech graduate, is a Butte native and played five years for the Oredigger program from 2013-18.
"We are thrilled to have one of our own leading the Montana Tech golf program," Stepan said. "As a former Oredigger, David understands the unique challenges and opportunities of competing at Montana Tech, and he will bring a student-centered approach that aligns perfectly with our vision for the program."
Starcevich has coached the Butte Central Catholic High School golf team and serves on the board of directors at the Butte Country Club. He works full-time for the City-County of Butte-Silver Bow as a code enforcement officer. He takes over for another Montana Tech alumnus in Sean Ryan, who resigned earlier this summer to pursue an opportunity outside of higher education.
"I'm excited at the opportunity to lead Montana Tech golf and plan to move the program along," Starcevich said. "Coach Ryan has set the bar high and made great strides in the past several years. Roll Diggs!"
Starcevich inherits a program on the rise indeed. Montana Tech's women had their first-ever tournament medalist and Frontier Conference player of the week, rising senior
Emma Woods, last season, and the team won a pair of tournaments. Tech's women finished second at the Frontier/Cal Pac NAIA Qualifier postseason tournament, while the men took third.
The Oredigger teams got it done in the classroom, too. The programs combined for 16 Academic All-Frontier Conference and five College Sports Communicators Academic All-District awards in 2024-25.
"I want to thank the outstanding student-athletes in our program for their patience, input, and continued commitment throughout this process," Stepan said. "Coach Starcevich is inheriting an exceptional group of leaders, outstanding students, and competitive golfers, and we are excited for the future of Montana Tech golf."
Montana Tech's teams will open up the fall portion of the schedule with some local competition, teeing off at Butte Country Club's Labor Day Classic September 3-5.
