HELENA -- Montana Tech's
Rhys Layton earned the Erck Hotels/Frontier Conference volleyball setter of the week award, the league office announced Monday.
Layton, a senior from Eagle, Idaho, helped Montana Tech to a 2-1 record over the weekend at Olivet Nazarene's Tigers Kickoff Invite, racking up 107 assists, 34 digs, four kills, four aces, and a block over the three matches. She had double-doubles with assists and digs in all three.
She started the weekend with 25 assists, 12 digs, and three aces in Friday's five-set, season-opening loss to the host Tigers.
Layton then caught fire Saturday in a pair of five-set victories for the Orediggers. She had 34 assists, 10 digs, three kills, and a block in the morning's win over Mount Marty. She followed that with 48 assists, 12 digs, an ace, and a kill in the afternoon as Montana Tech topped Spring Arbor. It was the 15th time in Layton's career that she topped the 45-assist threshold.
The conference setter of the week award is the sixth of Layton's decorated career. She was a second-team all-conference honoree in 2024 and the Frontier's freshman of the year in 2023.
Montana Tech junior
Halle Moomaw joined Layton on the weekly honor roll as the attacker of the week, while Providence's Cabry Badley was the defensive player of the week awardee.
The Orediggers will be back in action this week in the Mining City for the Big Sky Volleyball Challenge. The first of Montana Tech's three matches is scheduled for Thursday at noon versus Indiana University East at the Butte Civic Center.
