DILLON -- The rushing attack was relentless, the defense forced three turnovers, and the fifth-ranked Montana Tech football team rolled to a 34-7 road win at No. 18 Montana Western Saturday afternoon.
Running back
Jamal Cariglia rushed for 204 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries to lead the way for the Oredigger offense. The senior from South Portland, Maine became just the ninth player in the program's history to top the 200-yard rushing mark in a single game.
Quarterback
Jarrett Wilson facilitated the rest. The junior was 16-for-26 through the air, including a touchdown pass, and he rushed for another 21 yards and a score.
Meanwhile, the Oredigger defense did a phenomenal job keeping the ball in Montana Tech's hands, forcing three Bulldog turnovers.
The game could not have started better for Montana Tech (3-0). The Orediggers received the opening kickoff and marched 75 yards down the field to find pay dirt on their first possession. Tech cruised into Bulldog territory with first downs on three consecutive plays before the drive appeared to stall.
A penalty backed the Orediggers up to first-and-20, and Tech was unable to reach the marker in three downs. On fourth-and-5, however, Wilson found
Levi Torgerson for a 10-yard gain that earned the visiting team a fresh set of downs. Five plays later, on third-and-goal, Wilson beat the defense around the edge and dove for the pylon to give the Orediggers the early lead.
After the Oredigger defense forced a punt, the offense went back to work. Cariglia began the second drive with an 11-yard run, and the offensive line continued to set the tone. It took Montana Tech just seven plays to march the 75 yards, capping the drive when Wilson hit
Gunnar Peterson on a check-down. The sophomore scampered 24 yards for his first-career touchdown and a 14-0 Oredigger lead.
It didn't take the Bulldogs (1-1) long to respond. Kaden LaPlaunt threw a 75-yard strike to Eli Nourse to bring the deficit back to one possession with 12:09 until halftime.
Montana Tech again had no trouble moving the ball into Western turf, but a missed field goal on the Orediggers' third possession held the score at 14-7.
That looked to be the tally headed into halftime, but
Cohen Kastelitz forced a Nourse fumble on a punt return with 5 seconds left in the half and dove on the loose ball to earn Tech a last-second shot at a field goal. Oredigger kicker
Casey Kautzman's 39-yard attempt was true this time, and the visitors carried a 17-7 lead into the break.
After Western was forced to punt on its first possession of the third, the Oredigger offense went back to work. Wilson again piloted Tech into enemy territory to set up Kautzman's second field goal of the afternoon, a 40-yarder that the Butte native put through the uprights to lead 20-7.
The Bulldog offense drove all the way to the Orediggers' 3-yard line on its next possession, but a key
Christian Hansen pass breakup in the end zone and a huge stop inside the 5 by
Cole Graham and
Kellan Beller kept the home team out of the end zone.
Then the Orediggers turned to Cariglia. The senior rushed seven times for 75 yards on a clock-eating, 97-yard drive that he polished off with a 1-yard TD plunge that put the game out of reach, 27-7 Montana Tech, with 7:47 left in the game.
Merek Mihelish put the cherry on top.
Brett Grange intercepted Bulldogs reserve quarterback Sam Wulff on Western's next possession, setting up a 45-yard Mihelish touchdown run on the redshirt freshman's only carry of the day.
Beller anchored the Oredigger defense with a team-best eight tackles and an interception of his own. Hansen, the reigning NAIA defensive player of the week, added six tackles and three pass deflections.
The resounding Oredigger victory was Montana Tech's first in Dillon since the 2022 season and marked the fewest points Tech allowed the Bulldogs since a 43-7 home victory in 2012.
Montana Tech will return home to put its unblemished record on the line next Saturday, September 19 when Southern Oregon pays a visit to the Mining City in the Montana Tech Hall of Fame Game, presented by Intermountain Health.
