Tech Beats No. 25 Coyotes

Box Score

CALDWELL, Idaho — Brian Cummings netted 15 points and Bryan Bock came in off the bench to help spark Montana Tech to a 56-53 non-conference college men's basketball win over the NAIA 25th-ranked College of Idaho Saturday night.

Tyree Haynie, A.J. Paine and Trent Thompson scored seven points apiece in the Oredigger win, backing Cummings' scoring effort.

Haynie connected on three free throws with 1 minute, 33 seconds left to break a 53-53 tie, as Montana Tech upended the College of Idaho in the final game of the Wendy's Classic.

The Coyotes had three chances in the final minute, as DeAngelo Jackson missed the front end of a 1-and-1, but C of I corralled the offensive rebound.

Sydney Donaldson missed a trey in the corner with 19 seconds left, but a second offensive board gave the Coyotes a final chance, but Sean Spooner's 22-footer at the horn missed to the right.

Matt Ballenger led the Coyotes with 17 points.

“It was a grinding game,” described Montana Tech head coach Aaron Woliczko said after his team improved to 5-1 for the season. “It was a horrific shooting night. We shot 30 percent from the field and they shot 36 percent.

“Where we won was we outrebounded them 42-37, including 16 offensive rebounds. We scored 12 second-chance points off the offensive rebounds.”

Halftime showed College of Idaho holding a 29-25 edge on the scoreboard.

“The change in the game was we substituted Bryan Bock in in the second half,” Woliczko said. “He scored only four points, but he had seven rebounds for the game and really elevated our energy level. He really came in and changed the game.”

Cummings shot 5 for 11 from the field, but 3 for 3 from the 3-point line in the first half.

“And we have a thing that when a kid gets 10 rebounds he gets to sign our 'rebounding bubble,' “Woliczko said. “One of our true freshmen, Adam Greger, got to do that tonight. He had 10 rebounds. We've now had two players do that this year and both are true freshmen. (Greger) and Brandon Rydberg are the only ones to do that this year.

“Trent Thompson almost did. He had nine rebounds.”

The Orediggers will be off on Sunday, then will go to Nampa, Idaho, on Monday for a game against Northwest Nazarene.
