BUTTE -- Montana Tech will welcome one of the most accomplished coaches in college basketball to campus Saturday, August 29 as Kelvin Sampson headlines a pair of events designed to benefit both young basketball players and Montana Tech students.
Sampson, Montana Tech's head men's basketball coach from 1981-85 and now the head coach at University of Houston, will travel to Butte to put on a youth basketball clinic and scholarship-fundraising dinner on the Montana Tech campus.
The day begins with the Butte Community Youth Basketball Clinic, scheduled for 9 a.m.-noon at Valley Bank Arena inside the Montana Tech HPER Complex. The clinic is open to boys and girls in grades 3-8 and offers young athletes an opportunity to learn and develop their skills in a fun basketball environment.
A limited number of spots remain for the clinic. Registration will close at noon Thursday. Participants can register through High Potential Camps.
Saturday evening, Montana Tech will host an exclusive evening with Coach Kelvin Sampson from 6-9 p.m., also inside Valley Bank Arena. The fundraising dinner and keynote presentation will benefit the Kelvin and Karen Sampson Endowed Scholarship Fund, helping support Montana Tech men's basketball student-athletes.
Tickets for the evening are $100 per person. Those interested in attending can register through the event registration page.
Kelvin Sampson led Montana Tech to three straight Frontier Conference championships from 1983-85 before moving on to NCAA Division I Washington State. In the years since, he has led the programs at Indiana, Oklahoma, and Houston, and spent six seasons as an assistant coach in the NBA. He has led three teams to the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament's Final Four, twice with Houston and once with Oklahoma.
