Big things come in small packages. For Montana Tech's volleyball team, big things are coming early.
Kimmy Kavran, 5'3” freshman libero, is shredding the digs records at Montana Tech and leads the country with a 7.1 digs per set average.
In a sport that lends well to height, Kavran hunkers down in the back row to take the brunt of the other teams' taller hitters. In 22 matches this season, she has tied or broken the former mark for most digs in a game. Friday night, and with six games to go in the regular season, she will go for the most digs in a single-season record. She is currently one shy of the 608 digs recorded by Kaila Minehan in 2002.
In addition to record setting, the Lady Diggers are hosting two tough competitors this weekend as they climb the standings in the Frontier Conference. Tech host MSU-Northern Friday night at Kelvin Sampson Court and No. Lewis-Clark State on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Diggers (14-8, 4-6) are on a three game winning streak. But the Northern Lights (12-12, 6-4) and Warriors (12-7, 8-2) handed the Diggers losses in the form of sweeps earlier in the season and will not go quietly. Tech is 3-1 in Butte this season and will use that to their advantage.
In addition to Kavran, freshman
Alison Lunde is making an impression early in her career. She averages 10.5 assists a game leading the Frontier Conference. Lunde has 894 total assists on the season and is quietly approaching the single season top five list. She also leads the team in the service aces category with 23 on the season.
Sophomore
Korey Krumm is playing strong of late. The middle blocker from Anaconda is leading the conference in hitting percentage with 0.294. She is having a career season with 208 kills so far averaging 2.7 a game.
Friday night's match against Northern starts at 7 PM. Kavran will have the record early in the match. At the ten minute break between sets two and three, she will be honored for her record setting year.
The Lewis-Clark match starts at 2 PM on Saturday.
